Hello, I'm zaiya collins

Hello, I'm zaiya collins

I am a passionate senior at Fort Worth Country Day with a deep love for STEM, research, and innovation. My academic journey includes rigorous AP courses like Biology, Literature & Composition, and Calculus BC, alongside honors classes that have honed my analytical and critical thinking skills.

Community service is central to my values. I am the founder of Protecting Peace, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to promoting literacy, education, and environmental stewardship. Additionally, as Reading and Comprehension Chair for Grace 4 Race Nonprofit, I led initiatives to improve literacy in underserved communities. At Fort Worth Country Day, I founded the Senior Polo Recycling Program, which this year alone saved over 100 pounds of fabric from landfills. My passion for sustainability is further reflected in my research on carbon injection techniques and AI’s impact on marginalized communities.

Beyond academics, I embrace leadership roles that foster growth and connection. As a Link Crew Peer Mentor, I guide new students through their transition, and as a delegate for the Student Diversity Leadership Conference, I advocate for diversity and social justice. I also serve as the Newsletter Editor for “Sustainable and Just Future,” curating content on sustainability and equity.

My extracurricular activities reflect my organizational and leadership skills. I manage logistics and social media for the Varsity Boys Basketball team, bring energy to school events as a Varsity Cheerleader, and serve as the financial manager for the Solar Car team, overseeing budgets and ensuring the team’s financial sustainability. Professionally, I gained marketing and event coordination experience as a Junior Intern at Amagine Technologies LLC.

Recognized for my achievements, including the College Board African American Achievement Award, I strive to make a positive impact through my academic pursuits, leadership roles, and passion projects.

My Research

Zaiya is an avid researcher. She has argued for the banning of Artificial Intelligence by police forces and has delved into environmental protection with research on sustainability, including topics such as carbon injections, and Houston air pollution and its effects on asthma.

Her diverse research interests also led her to explore geothermal energy in Iceland. There, she performed data collection and conducted statistical analysis on more than a dozen sites to assess the potential of implementing reduction mechanisms such as carbon capture and sequestration through injection into Iceland’s basalt deposits.

My Book

Inspired by my own journey of embracing her natural hair, I wrote a book for Black toddler girls to empower them to love their hair.

My Senior Polo Recycling Program

I developed a program for my school to re-cycle and re-purpose Senior polos each year, to keep these graduation-year embroidered polos out of landfills. As a result, 300-500 polos/90 to 150 pounds of fabric is saved from landfills each year, which would have taken anywhere from 20-200 years to decompose.
